Dr. Kunihiko Suzuki graduated from the Division of History and Philosophy of Science, College of General Education, Tokyo University, in 1955 and received the Bachelor of Arts degree. Then, he re-entered Tokyo University, this time to Faculty of Medicine, and graduated from it with the M.D. degree in 1959. After a year of internship at the US Airforce Hospital in Tachikawa, he left Japan in 1960 for clinical neurology residency training at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, New York. After several years of clinical patient care activities at the Bronx Municipal Hospital Center in New York, Dr. Suzuki shifted his attention to his primary interest, molecular and biochemical research of genetic neurological disorders affecting the brain of children. After 1969, he worked at the University of Pennsylvania (Associate Professor of Neurology) for 3 years, back in Albert Einstein College of Medicine (Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience) until 1984, then at the University of North Carolina (Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry, Director of the Brain and Development Research Center (later re-named Neuroscience Center) until his retirement in 2002. He then had the position of Director of the Institute of Glycotechnology at Tokai University as his first and only position in Japan, 2003~2007. He gave up his US residency status in 2008 and returned permanently to Japan. He has been President of the American Society of Neurochemistry (1987~1989), President of the International Society for Neurochemistry (1993~1995), Chief Editor of the Journal of Neurochemistry (1977-1981), Editor-in-Chief of the Proceedings of the Japan Academy series B (2021~present).
